The story of two matching antique dining-room pieces thoughtfully left for us when we purchased our 1915 South Highlands home.
Treasures Left Behind: Our Antique Buffet and Server
When Joey and I purchased our home, we gained more than a beautiful old house. We also gained a dear friendship with the previous owner.
During the buying and selling process, we became very close. When it was time for us to make the house our own, she generously left these two beautiful antique pieces for us.
They are not original to the house, but they have become a meaningful part of its continuing story. Every time I see them, I am reminded of her kindness and the friendship that grew between us.
A Matching Antique Pair
The larger piece is an antique buffet or sideboard. Its drawers and cupboards would traditionally have held linens, silverware, dishes, and serving pieces. The smaller piece is its matching server, which would have provided additional space for serving tea, desserts, or drinks.
Based on their design, they were most likely made between 1910 and 1930. Their curved legs, brass ring pulls, floral decorations, shaped aprons, and little furniture casters are all lovely early-1900s details.
The pieces may be made from mahogany or walnut veneer over sturdy hardwood. I hope to search the drawers and backs for a label, stamp, or handwritten number that might help us identify their maker.
A Gift We Will Always Treasure
Their worn finish and little imperfections show that they have been used and loved for many years. Although they did not begin their lives inside our 1915 home, they belong to its story now.
We will always be thankful that these beautiful antiques were left in our care. They are a sweet reminder that sometimes the greatest treasures left behind are the friendships and acts of kindness attached to them.
Do You Recognize Them?
