Hi, I’m Heather, and I’m so glad you found your way here.
My husband, Joey, and I are fortunate to call a beautiful 1915 home in Shreveport, Louisiana’s Historic South Highlands neighborhood our home.
At more than 100 years old, this house has witnessed generations of life on Jefferson. Long before we came along, families walked through these doors, gathered around its tables, celebrated milestones in its rooms and left behind pieces of a story that we are only beginning to uncover.
Today, we have the privilege of adding our own chapter.
Our 1915 Home
Our house was built in 1915, and its age, architecture and connection to the history of Shreveport are a large part of what made us fall in love with it.
Its setting makes that story even more special. We live in Historic South Highlands, one of Shreveport’s beautiful older neighborhoods, surrounded by tree-lined streets, distinctive architecture and homes that have been part of the city’s landscape for generations.
The longer we’ve lived here, the more curious I’ve become about the people and stories connected to our home.
What began as simple curiosity has grown into a much larger research and preservation project.
We’ve been searching through historical records, old photographs, newspaper archives, census records, property information and other sources to piece together the history of the house and the people who once called it home.
Every discovery seems to lead to another question—and I absolutely love that part of the journey.
Preserving Its Story
One of our greatest hopes is that our home may someday receive official historic recognition.
We are currently researching and documenting the property as we work through the early stages of exploring its eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
The process is still underway, so nothing is official yet. But regardless of where that journey ultimately leads, researching and preserving the story of this more-than-century-old home has become incredibly meaningful to us.
There is something special about realizing that we are only temporary caretakers of a place that was here long before us and, we hope, will remain long after us.
Through this blog, I’ll be sharing that journey as it happens—the historical research, old photographs, architectural discoveries, stories of former residents, preservation projects and all the unexpected little pieces of history we uncover along the way.
And hopefully, one day, I’ll have some very exciting news to share about our home’s historic recognition.
Life Inside the House
But The House on Jefferson isn’t only about preserving what came before us.
It’s also about celebrating the life happening inside these walls today.
I’m a stay-at-home wife, and homemaking is something I genuinely love. For me, creating a home isn’t about making everything perfect. It’s about making the place where we live feel warm, welcoming, comfortable and full of the things and people we love.
I have a soft spot for antiques, estate-sale treasures, old photographs, traditional Southern decorating and pieces that look as though they’ve been collected over generations rather than purchased all at once.
There is usually something happening around here—a decorating project, something cooking in the kitchen, work in the garden, another old-house mystery I’m researching, family coming through the door or friends from church gathering around our table.
And then there are the wonderfully ordinary days.
Those deserve to be remembered, too.
Faith, Family & Hospitality
Our faith, marriage, family and church community are an important part of the life we are building here.
I believe a home can be a place of hospitality and fellowship—a place where the door is opened, another chair can always be pulled up to the table and people feel genuinely welcome.
Some of my favorite memories in this house have nothing to do with its architecture or history.
They’re simply moments when it was full of people we love.
What You’ll Find at The House on Jefferson
This blog is where all of those parts of our life come together.
You’ll find stories about our 1915 home and its history, homemaking, decorating, antiques and estate-sale finds, gardening, recipes, entertaining, faith, hospitality, family life, our Historic South Highlands neighborhood, preservation and historical research, and the everyday moments that make a house a home.
One day I may share an exciting discovery about someone who lived here a century ago.
The next, I may simply show you what I’m cooking for supper or what I’ve rearranged in the living room.
That’s exactly how I want it.
Because while this house has an important past, it is still very much a living, loved-in home.
Come On In and Stay Awhile
More than anything, I want The House on Jefferson to feel like an extension of our actual home.
Warm. Welcoming. Collected. A little old-fashioned. And always with room for one more.
This house had a story long before Joey and I arrived, and God willing, its story will continue long after us.
For now, we’re simply grateful to be its caretakers—to preserve what we can, learn everything we can about the people who came before us, and fill these old rooms with a new generation of memories.
So come on in, have a look around, and stay awhile.
Welcome to The House on Jefferson.
With love,
Heather
