A few months ago, Joey and I brought this unusual beauty home from an estate sale. I knew I loved it before I even completely understood what it was.
We were told it was an antique pole fire screen, once positioned near a fireplace to shield a person’s face from the intense direct heat. Then came the part of the story that really caught my attention: we were also told that ladies used screens like this to help keep the heat from melting the wax and other ingredients in their cosmetics.
Naturally, that sent me down a little historical rabbit hole. 😂
The basic story checks out. Pole fire screens were both decorative and practical, and examples survive from the late 1700s and early 1800s. Their adjustable screens helped protect someone sitting close to an open fire from uncomfortable heat. Historical sources also connect some pole screens with protecting cosmetics from the fire’s warmth.
Ours has plenty of age showing, from the worn painted scene and tiny flowers to the fragile backing. I’m leaving those imperfections alone for now. They are part of what makes me wonder where it stood, who owned it, and what stories it could tell.
And yes, you’re getting the tiniest peek at our parlor in the background. I’m saving the rest of that room for another day. 🤎
Have you ever brought home an estate sale find that sent you down a historical rabbit hole? Tell me about it in the comments.
