Sometimes a familiar space only needs the furniture moved around to feel inviting all over again.

I spent a little time rearranging the east wing of our patio, and now I keep finding reasons to step outside and admire it. This is a separate space from the west side, where our wrought iron table, green cushions, and mahogany umbrella make a lovely place to sit and visit. I am enjoying giving each side its own purpose while making the whole patio feel welcoming.

The East Wing Before

Our covered east wing already had a comfortable place to sit, with dark wicker chairs, a glass table, a patterned rug, and plenty of plants. Our dog liked to watch it from the window. I wanted to see how a fresh arrangement might make the space feel even more inviting.

A Fresh View After Dark

Here is the space after I rearranged it. The evening light brings out the lantern and makes the seating feel especially cozy. It is still the same patio and the same pieces, just a new way to enjoy them.

Making Room to Stay Awhile

When I picture this patio, I picture Joey and me lingering outside after supper, or pulling up another chair when someone comes over. I want it to feel easy to settle in, visit, and stay awhile.

That is one of my favorite things about caring for an old home in Shreveport’s historic South Highlands. Its story is always with us, but we get to add our own ordinary days to it. Moving a chair may be a small change, yet it helps us use this space for the life we are living here now.

Have you ever rearranged an outdoor space and found yourself using it more? Tell me what you changed in the comments.
